Paul O'Grady is a reminder that the very best people are always dog lovers 🐾 Simon_Kelner via ipaperviews

, and my thoughts went to those five animals – Nancy, Arfur, Conchita, Eddie and Sausage – who now have an unfathomable but very real hole in their lives. We don’t often consider grief from the pet’s perspective, but dogs mourn much like humans do, recognising a painful absence in their daily life, and becoming depressed and disengaged as a consequence.

For us, these are feelings of loss that we may be able to articulate, but are not always easier to process, and I was struck by what O’Grady said when his beloved Bullseye died in 2019. “I can’t handle it,” he lamented. “It’s what I always say – invite an animal into your life, and inevitably you invite heartache.” He’s right, of course, but this is a simplistic proposition that elicits serious philosophical discussion.

My friend Matthew said goodbye to his fox red Labrador, Vincent, earlier this week. He was almost nine years old and was diagnosed with terminal cancer six weeks ago. But those bare facts don’t in the least recount a companionship that was as deep and meaningful as any between two humans, or a life that was as rich and varied and eventful as only the luckiest among us can claim.

Vincent accompanied Matthew everywhere, striding purposefully alongside him as if he was a canine security detail. He went to his office, on fabulous holidays and was a fixture at London’s most glamorous parties. As a result, Vincent had a lofty disdain for other dogs, believing – or maybe in fact knowing – that he was of a superior caste.
