The motorway was closed for a number of hours while emergency services attended
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the motorway at around 3.45pm. The collision involved a HGV and a pedestrian.
During the incident, a diversion was put in place and motorists were warned to allow extra time for their journeys. North West Motorway Police were made aware of people driving the wrong way up the M61 to avoid being caught in the congestion. "We were called to the Northbound carriageway of the M61 near to Chorley at around 3.45pm yesterday after reports of a collision between an HGV and a pedestrian in the carriageway.
