Brazilian football icon Pele's daughter has shared a tribute after her father died at the age of 82, following his battle with colon cancer
It is believed Pele had been at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo since 29 November.
A medical report read that he needed care for cardiac and renal dysfunction after battling colon cancer since September 2021.Posting on Instagram, she said: "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."The footballer - originally named Edson Arantes do Nascimento - began playing for Santos at the age of 15 and the Brazilian national team a year later, before bursting onto the world football scene in the 1958 World Cup when he was 17.
His career is an inspiration to many after being the only football player to have won three World Cups - in 1958, 1962 and 1970.Fabrizio Romano said: "Brazilian legend Pelé has passed away at 82, one of the greatest of all time who changed the game. "A man with a god-given talent, one of the names who will remain forever in the memory. All thoughts with the family. RIP, legend."Liverpool FC tweeted: "A legend, icon and true great of the game who will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, Pele."Dan Walker paid a tribute by writing: "Some sporting stars inspire their team mates. Some inspire a nation and, occasionally, a generation.
He added: "He was one of the great entertainers, through his pure skill, talent and ability. He was also a proven goalscorer. The name Pele is just synonymous with football."
