And studies indicate that in younger age groups that number is even lower. Data from the European Social Survey suggests that just 21 per cent of British 16 to 29-year-olds identify as Christian, while the 2019 British Social Attitudes survey reported that only 36 per cent of those aged 18-34 claimed any religion at all.
“We have to defend our decision to identify as Christian, and explain everything to our peers from scratch. It sometimes feels like older generations in the church don’t understand how hard that can be.” But there is some reason for optimism for the church. While most under-35s in the UK identify as following ‘no religion’, the religion and society think-tank Theos hasthat this does not necessarily indicate a hostility to faith or belief. Its own polling of 5,000 “Nones” found that 42 per cent believed in some form of the supernatural. And BSA data suggests that belief in life after death is highest in the youngest age group.
