Conservatives support plans to ditch river pollution protections to build more housing

“People do need houses. I expect a statement or urgent question when we get back [to Parliament], which should give [Environment Secretary] Therese [Coffey] or [Housing Secretary] Michael Gove an opportunity to explain how we can still achieve our goals.”, Conservative chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, who said the “main culprit” for nutrient pollution in the waterways was the agricultural sector and not housing developments.

“These will require environmental regulators and local authorities to work together to develop bespoke plans that ensure nutrient budgets are not exceeded,” he added. Labour’s shadow housing secretary Lisa Nandy criticised the Government, but not the plan to scrap the regulations, stating: “With housebuilding projected to fall to the lowest level since World War Two and our rivers full of sewage, the Conservatives are failing on both housing and the environment.
