'People we're speaking to don't have access to food': A day on a youth homelessness helpline ⤵️ ☎️ centrepointuk are hearing from more students and people in full time work as people struggle to keep a roof over their heads
Paul Brocklehurst, pictured, said Centrepoint’s youth homelessness helpline has begun issuing food bank vouchers as they are being contacted by more young people who can’t afford food Paul Brocklehurst has worked in youth homelessness for more than six years, but this winter has been unlike any other.
“I remember one guy told us he couldn’t think properly because he hadn’t been having any breakfast and was limiting himself to one meal a day. We can now issue food bank vouchers on the helpline, which is great, but it’s something we have never had to do before. We are primarily a housing helpline, but the reality is that so many people we’re speaking to now just don’t have any access to food. They can’t afford food or they’re not able to prioritise it.
“We spoke to somebody that had just started university in London and he ended up in a squat with no hot water or heating and it just feels like there is not enough support in getting people into halls and then they’re pretty much screwed,” he said, adding that rising private rents have been a huge challenge for many of the young people the charity supports.
“We’ve always had some students but normally it’s been generally young people that have either been at home and had an argument with family or we’ve had young people who perhaps were in university, but something’s gone wrong and they need to drop out and therefore are losing their accommodation.
“We’re seeing fear. When all this conversation started about rising prices a lot of young people became distressed and quite scared of how it was going to work and what was going to happen and where they might get help. We’re now seeing that have a real impact on young people who are sitting in the dark without fuel and still trying to manage a life outwith that,” she said.
Ms Polson said she was worried that young people on the brink of homelessness were not aware of the help that is out there.
