Outside of uniform costs, other necessities such as a school bag, lunch box, water bottle and a full school-branded PE kit increases the total costs by more than £120
Debt expert Creditfix has revealed that the ‘pink tax’ starts as early as primary school, with costs for back-to-school essentials entering year 1 coming out significantly higher than those for their male counterparts. Data shows parents can pay up to £300 for back-to-school items, and uniform costs for girls going into year 1 are nearly 8% higher than for boys.
And the ‘pink tax’ doesn’t just stop at uniforms, data shows items like deodorant can cost over 10% more for women than men. While it’s difficult to quantify the exact amount parents of girls have to pay because of the pink tax, there is data out there that shows some items have a significant effect on budgets.
. Parents of boys going into reception and Year 1 and 2 can expect uniform cost of £82.40, whereas parents of girls going into reception and Year 1 and 2 can spend £89.
