They were built in 1685
A developer has insisted they are 'not milking' a set of historic Nottinghamshire almshouses despite a charity's worries over damage to the more than 300-year-old buildings. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings has called on Broxtowe Borough Council to reconsider its decision to give consent to plans to create homes at the rear of the Grade II* Willoughby Almshouses in Cossall, prompting a defence of the project by the site's owner.
“Given the extent of change proposed to the building’s historic plan form and fabric, its front and rear elevations, and its setting, little would remain of its special interest were the proposals to be implemented," Mr Slocombe said."We would welcome the building being repaired and brought back into use, but this could be done in a much more sensitive way, for example by providing smaller affordable homes, for which there is a real need.
According to SPAB, one of the most striking aspects of the almshouses is the contrast between the "ornate and decorative exterior and the almost spartan interiors" paid for by George Willoughby’s philanthropy. But Richard Ling, who acted as the planning agent for applicant Gurjit Mahal throughout the process, said this cramped nature meant their plan was the best way to restore the site.
"My client bought the place about two years ago and entered into discussions to get it into some kind of reasonable and beneficial use. We revised our application following discussions with the council and Historic England.
