This could be hugely important for staff and patients
The hospital trust running the Queen's Medical Centre is starting initial work on a new 1,500-space multi-storey car park at the site. The Nottingham University Hospitals Trust has been given £370,000 of Government funding to explore plans for three key projects, which it says are needed to prepare its sites for wider transformation plans.
Those plans are part of the Government's 2019 pledge to build 40 new hospitals over 10 years, with the Nottingham element of the programme dubbed 'Tomorrow's NUH'. Proposals include a new welcome centre at the QMC, which would become the main site for emergency care and also home to a new cancer centre, whilst the City Hospital would deliver most elective operations.
The Government recently announced that those plans would be delayed beyond the original deadline of 2030. Nottingham joined areas including Eastbourne and Lancashire where will start over the next two years, but will become part of a "rolling programme" where "not all work will be completed by 2030."Despite the delay, NUH says its new funding will get its sites ready for the eventual changes.
"We know that any redevelopment on the QMC site will require us to have the space to be able to build new facilities and these inevitably will need to be constructed on existing car parks, and therefore we are going to continue to progress our plans for the 1,500 space multi-story car park so we are ready to proceed. We will also start to work with National Grid to make sure the power supply to both our sites meets the future needs of our staff and patients.
Part of the new funding will be used to update the outline business case for the car park, which would free up two ground level car parks for new clinical facilities. The funding would also be used to develop a business case to ensure the power supply infrastructure will meet the demands of changes at both sites.
