Councillors decided to refer the plans to the Education Resources Committee
At the full council meeting yesterday , councillor Janine Calikes proposed a motion to introduce LGBT inclusive education in schools across the region.
Proposer of the motion Janine Calikes, said: “I’m happy to bring this motion to council as our schools go back after the summer holidays, and our minds are firmly on our young people in our hopes that they’ll succeed in their education and they have a fulfilling and enriched experience in their educational environments. I would like to thank our director of education and the council’s legal team for the help in getting this motion to full council today.
“Our motion today sets out an ambition for South Lanarkshire in relation to inclusive education charity TIE who have developed, launched and now manage new national platform lgbteducation.scot on behalf of the Scottish Government which provides core funding, resources, they provide resources for teachers and schools who support effective implementation of inclusive education in the school setting, teaching both in primary and secondary which was co-created by teachers.
Councillor Kirsten Robb , welcomed the motion, and said: “I’m really proud to support this simple and clear motion for two reasons. We need to stand up for teachers and young people, firstly because young people deserve the support to be accepted for themselves so they can be happy and reach their potential. They also need safe spaces to ask questions and explore issues they’re facing, this motion seeks to encourage this support in these safe spaces.
