The Chancellor has also set out his intention to toughen up benefit sanctions further in the upcoming statement but is yet to specify details of this.As of July 2023, 2.6 million of the 8.7 million economically inactive people in the UK logged long term sickness as the reason, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Sources say this can be done by broadening the availability of occupational health support and encouraging people to consider whether changes to their work – such as working from home – could enable them to remain in employment. The Government is also now rewriting the guidance to encourage them to have more in depth routine conversations about work with chronically ill patients.
Long-term sickness accounted for more than a quarter of total inactivity at the end of January 2023, up from 23 per cent at the start of 2019, making it the most common reason.
