The Prime Minister acknowledged it would be an 'anxious' time for those employed by the Nottinghamshire-based retailer
The Prime Minister says Wilko staff should be "reassured" that the government will be there to support them if necessary amid continued uncertainty over the Nottinghamshire-based retailer's future. Rishi Sunak visited Nottinghamshire on Wednesday , the day administrators reportedly set as the deadline for potential buyers of Wilko to come forward.
Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, the Prime Minister said: "I know it will be an anxious time for many of those people and they should know the Department for Work and Pensions in particular has resources that it can stand up to support employees. I can't comment on the commercial process that might be going on at the moment regarding the company, which I'm sure you'll appreciate.
Mr Sunak spoke to local reporters for 10 minutes during his visit on a range of issues. More broadly on the situation around Wilko, the Prime Minister said: "It's obviously a much-loved institution. Despite the measures mentioned by the Prime Minister, many experts have called for the government to go further in the wake of Wilko's administration announcement. In particular, the East Midlands Chamber has called for a "full root-and-branch review of the broken business rates system."
