Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are leading recruitment and had met with Nagelsmann on multiple occasions. Nagelsmann is only 35 years old and considered one of the brightest young managers in the game.
It is believed Nagelsmann was uncertain that the structures in place at Chelsea would suit his style of management, although there is also the view that he and the club were wide apart on some issues.
