07:22The government is being criticised for going back on its promise not to hike taxes - but Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said there was no other choice.

"I think what we've announced in the last 24 hours is a very Conservative thing to do," he said, describing the cost of social care currently as"not acceptable". It was a political gamble for the prime minister, who would likely have been hesitant to hike taxes - breaking a Tory manifesto promise.
