Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is due to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak later today for"substantive negotiations".
The Department of Health has insisted the government's pay offer was"fair" and there are"no plans to reopen negotiations on this deal".Members of the National Association of Head Teachers and National Education Union rejected the government's recent pay offer of an average 4.5% rise and a one-off £1,000 payment.
But Sir Keir told the paper his party would be likely to"inherit a very difficult set of circumstances" if it enters government at the next election. He is grappling with signs of discontent after poor local election results, while changes to the so-called Brexit"sunset" bill upset the right of his party.
The conflict in Ukraine will feature heavily as the prime minister embarks on a busy few days of diplomacy next week. His next stop will be Tokyo, where he is expected to announce a new UK-Japan collaboration on defence and technology as well as hosting a reception of business leaders. The hope is that by the end of the year an improving economy will give Rishi Sunak space to start withdrawing the foul-tasting medicine and offer MPs and voters something more appealing to chew on.The prime minister knows that, right now, there is no existential threat to his position.
The 53-year-old former Tory cabinet minister made the argument after being asked on Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme about what had been the main benefits of leaving the EU. Mr Turner was attempting to become a Tory councillor in Redcar in the Tees Valley, in addition to his existing £73,300 role overseeing the area's police service. However, he has now rejected accusations there was a conflict of interest stemming from his role as a police and crime commissioner., related to a Labour election leaflet in blue colours - the colour of the Conservatives. The other complaint was about alleged harassment, which he alerted police to via the 101 hotline.
