Senior Tory: MPs should be focused on issues that matter, not the 'Westminster gossip factory'

Sir Robert said MPs are there to deal with the issues that matter - the cost of living and the war in Ukraine - rather than the"Westminster gossip factory". A large chunk of Boris Johnson's resignation statement on Friday was dedicated to the privileges committee, which he labelled a"kangaroo court". In this case, the committee is regulating whether Boris Johnson deliberately misled them - something which would equate to contempt of parliament.

In its findings, it can conclude that an individual has been found to have"committed a contempt" in misleading the House, and it can recommend sanctions - ranging from an oral or written apology through to suspension for a specified period or even expulsion from the Commons. He accused the Conservatives of creating a"never-ending Tory soap opera", while suggesting the UK needs to"clean out politics"."If you look at the way that Boris Johnson has been behaving and how all of the other Conservatives have been behaving in parliament, it feels like we're in this never-ending Tory soap opera at the moment."

In a Twitter thread, the former culture secretary responded to the"speculation" as to why she is yet to formally quit the Commons, after announcing her intention to do so on Friday.dragging out the process to cause political pain for Rishi SunakHowever, she said she is"awaiting responses" to information she has requested from the House of Lords Appointments Committee , the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and the Cabinet Office.

He also spoke to a reporter, who asked if MPs will get a vote on any sanction recommended by the privileges committee."These are typically matters for the House, not the government, and it's the House of Commons and parliament that would decide the appropriate course of action." Mr Ellwood said the public"wants us to get back to politics", and added:"Johnson has resigned his seat, before the report was published I should say, rather than taking his arguments and presenting them to the Commons, which he could have done.
