'We've got to double down, stick to our plan, and deliver for people' PM Rishi Sunak reflects after the Conservatives lost the Selby and Somerton by-elections but held on in Uxbridge and South Ruislip 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

Sunak: On matters of substance, people vote Conservative

"When we get to that general election, what people are going to see is that I and the government and the party are going to build a brighter future for the children and their grandchildren."Conditions ahead of by-elections 'far from favourable' - Sunak Mr Sunak then reels off what he says his government has achieved in recent days: getting down inflation, announcing a long-term plan for the NHS, and passing the Stop the Boats bill.Sunak: 'The message I take away is we've got to double down'political correspondent Tamara Cohen

Rishi Sunak says the Tories' victory in this seat shows the general election is not"a done deal" - despite reports of a gloomy mood among Conservative MPs in recent months. Speaking from a cafe in Boris Johnson's former west London seat, he says:"Westminster's been acting like the next election is a done deal. The Labour Party has been acting like it's a done deal. The people of Uxbridge just told all of them that it's not.

The ULEZ was launched in central London in 2019, and later expanded up to the edge of the North and South Circular roads. The London mayor says the policy is all about cleaning up London's air, and has frequently quoted research from Imperial College estimating between 3,600 and 4,100 premature deaths occur in the capital in part due to poor air quality.

A £110m scrappage scheme was opened in January, offering low-income Londoners a £2,000 grant to scrap their car, or to help them buy one that complies with the ULEZ rules.Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner has told Sky News that Uxbridge was always going to be a challenge for the party, and said there will be"discussions" about the best way to ensure clean air in London.

She said people"acknowledge that there is a problem that we need to have clean air", and also noted that the ULEZ policy was first proposed by the Conservative Party when Boris Johnson was mayor of London. Asked if Sir Keir Starmer might talk to the mayor about dropping the policy, Ms Rayner said:"Well, I think there'll be discussions about the next Labour government."

Asked about those comments, Ms Rayner told Sky News:"I think the Conservatives need to read the room. Mr Sunak congratulated Steve Tuckwell, his party's victorious candidate in Boris Johnson's former seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip - but has not said anything about the large defeats in both Selby and Ainsty, and Somerton and Frome."I look forward to welcoming you in Westminster as our new Conservative MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip!"

He said:"I think it's always good to get new people in politics. You've got to have people who have actually done stuff. This guy has been to university longer than he's been in a job." He told Sky News that across the three by-elections, his party got"more votes for us than voted for Labour", pointing to Somerton and Frome where Labour won just 1,009 votes.
