Lucy Powell told Sky News:"Strike action is a sign of failure, it is incredibly disruptive, it is incredibly damaging as well. "The message from the government is that we have to be as fair as possible, given the very difficult economic circumstances - don't forget we still have £2tn in debt partly caused because of the £400bn spent on COVID, we've got the billions of pounds that are being spent on helping people with the cost of living and reducing energy bills.

"Absolutely, there are always ongoing talks with the trade unions and I know the secretary of state and the minister for schools has met the unions on a number of occasions. The MP - who had the Tory whip removed last year - was accused of groping two men while drunk in June last year. HS2 is a central part of the government's levelling up agenda, designed to improve rail connections between cities in the Midlands and the North with London.

Schools face further disruption on Friday as teachers walk out across England in the latest wave of strike action over pay. The government offered teachers a £1,000 one-off payment for the current school year and an average 4.5% rise for staff next year after intensive talks with the education unions.

It has also detailed the expansion of childcare services in 16 local authorities, in a bid to deliver a"landmark primary school childcare provision".It is expected to begin rolling out as early as summer 2024.
