Thousands of people flocked to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome for the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict
Pope Benedict became the first German to be elected head of the Roman Catholic Church in 1,000 years in 2005. His eight-year papacy came to an end in 2013 when he became the first pope in six centuries to stand down. He died on 31 December, 2022 aged 95.
At the end of the funeral, some admirers of Benedict called for him to be made a saint, using the same phrase that people chanted when John Paul II died, namely ‘Santo Subito!’, which translates from Italian to “Saint now”.
