'Powered by poo': The project transforming human waste into energy for 20,000 British homes 🔴 From kt_grant ✍️
Conventional wisdom has it that you can’t polish a turd – but for one enterprising water company technician there’s no reason you can’t transform it into something we can all benefit from. The 44-year-oldemployee proudly oversees a sophisticated operation in the North East that involves transforming human waste into an altogether cleaner and more appealing product: green energy to power people’s homes.
Mr Rutherford, who began working at the water company two decades ago, has helped to usher in technological developments enabling his firm to take the “sewage sludge” – human faeces and other solids that remain when wastewater is cleaned – and turn it into gas and electricity for thousands of households.
Each year, two anaerobic digestion plants, one run by Mr Rutherford on Tyneside and another on Teesside, process some two million cubic metres of sludge to generate 10MW of energy – enough to power around 20,000 homes for 12 months. He said: “The leftover material is then transported to be used as fertiliser, ensuring there is no waste at all. Prior to this project, sewage sludge was a waste product that needed a lot of energy to clean up so this transformation really is amazing.
Mr Rutherford is one of six energy “pioneers” to be selected to front a fresh campaign for Smart Energy GB, the Government-backed campaign behind the nationwide smart meter rollout., however, have been subject to criticism from some consumers and industry figures. Last week, Bill Bullen, the chief executive of energy firm Utilita, told industry publicationthe millions of pounds spent on the campaign over the past decade had “not been money well spent”.
