Prednisolone does not improve olfactory function after COVID-19, finds a study published in BMCMedicine

Since many patients suffer from olfactory disorders after COVID-19, we need to ensure the effectiveness of this treatment. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of a treatment in combination with olfactory training in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-centered trial.

We collected further baseline characteristics such as vaccination status and COVID-19 symptoms at first visit. Furthermore, we performed a nasendoscopy in order to eliminate other causes for olfactory disorders. Patients underwent objective smell and taste tests, and filled in three additional questionnaires. At the baseline visit, patients received their randomly allocated blinded study medication and were instructed to start their 10 days of study medication the next morning.
