President Zelensky's rallying cry, urging them to ‘prove that you are with us’, brought members of the European Parliament, many wearing t-shirts emblazoned with StandWithUkraine or wearing blue and yellow ribbons, to their feet 🇺🇦
Mr Zelensky spoke from Kyiv, where a huge Russian armoured column is bearing down, and said 16 children were killed during attacks on Monday.
His speech came after the presidents of eight central and eastern European nations published an open letter calling for Ukraine to be granted immediate EU candidate status and for the start of formal membership talks. He said: ‘We are fighting to be equal members of Europe. Do prove that you are with us. Do prove that you will not let us go.
‘Do prove that you are indeed Europeans, and then life will win over death and light will win over darkness. The EU will be much stronger with us.’EU Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen claps Charles Michel, the chairman of EU leaders, told the parliament after Mr Zelensky’s speech that the bloc would have to seriously look at Ukraine’s ‘legitimate’ request to join.They are expected to brand Russia a ‘rogue state’ later on Tuesday, according to a draft text they will vote on, and urge member states to agree even tougher sanctions.
