Record View says it’s welcome news that the number of deaths last year fell - but the blunt reality is that more than 1000 Scots again lost their lives to drugs.
Official statistics are published in late summer each year detailing just how many Scots have lost their lives to banned substances. It paints a devastating picture of how addiction disproportionately affects the poorest communities across the country.
The situation should never have been allowed to escalate to this point. The figures show that – just as in education, health and housing – being poor makes life a lot tougher. The dogged campaigning by charities specialising in drug rehabilitation and treatment also played a crucial role. Humza Yousaf and drugs minister Elena Whitham deserve praise for ensuring this crisis remains a top government priority.
