A historic wave of public protests in China continued last night 📽️ Videos geolocated to Guangzhou showed police wearing hazmat suits advancing towards a crowd with plastic shields. Some protesters threw glass bottles at them from behind barricades
City authorities announced on Tuesday that close contacts of Covid cases could serve quarantine periods at home rather than in shelters.
Beijing had previously announced 20 measures for relaxing protocols, including reducing quarantine periods and requirements for travellers entering the country. The process of removing restrictions appears to have accelerated as a rare wave of public demonstrations spread across the country since akilled 10 people on Thursday, with allegations that Covid measures hampered the emergency response.
Police keep some protesters behind a cordon during a protest against China’s strict ‘zero-Covid’ measures in Beijing Covid infrastructure such as testing booths were attacked by crowds in the aftermath of the fire. Protests spread to cities across the country including Beijing and Shanghai over the weekend, with protesters demanding an end to Covid restrictions and in some cases for the ruling Communist party and leader Xi Jinping to step down.
