Senior officers suggested the image may have been 'fake'
The PSNI is facing criticism for 'jumping the gun' and branding an image circulated online fake that appeared to show a man dressed in a Halloween costume in Derry as a 'Hamas' fighter.
But police later admitted that they had later "received a number of reports of a person dressed in a uniform" and had become "aware of additional images circulating on social media". Read more: PSNI aware of 'Hamas' Halloween costume image circulating on social media Now, Foyle MLA Gary Middleton has stepped in to criticise the PSNI's approach and accuse the police service of "jumping the gun" in dismissing the veracity of the photograph.
"The information I have received suggests there are those in the community who are in possession of footage and other evidence that could assist this investigation. It is crucial that those individuals are contacted and that fresh reports by concerned members of the public are followed up effectively."
