The crime is already punishable with a prison sentence of up to six months. By giving public harassment related to sex a harsher punishment, Home Secretary Suella Braverman wants to make women 'feel safe', she says.
To emphasise the"severity" of public sexual harassment and"encourage" women to report incidences to the police, Home Secretaryhas declared the government's support for a Public Member's Bill to have a longer sentence for those guilty of committing the crime because of a victim's sex.
"Every woman should feel safe to walk our streets without fear of harassment or violence", said Ms Braverman. "And that is why we are supporting this bill to introduce a specific offence on public sexual harassment." She added that it is a"complex issue" and that they are"putting the needs of the victims at the heart" of the decision, meaning"the criminals who commit these acts face the consequences they deserve".
