“An informal campaign is already underway,” the newspaper reported, adding that the campaign will emphasise “conservative values”. But the president is under rare pressure ahead of the campaign, says Dr Mark Galeotti, analyst and author on Russian politics and security, with“The real issue that makes these elections interesting is how much effort does the Kremlin put into getting the results it wants?” he said. “The more they rely on outright rigging, the greater the risk of some kind of public backlash.”
But the president will also hope for victories in Ukraine to boost his campaign, which could play into Kyiv’s hands.
