Pooley Bridge straddles the River Eamont at the head of Ullswater and has plenty of places to just stand back and take in the views around you
As you drive into Pooley Bridge early in the morning, everything is still. There are not many people out on the water and the village is exceptionally quiet.
But taking a stroll around this quaint and quiet little town is perfect to clear your mind. . The town's two wide main streets are lined with greystone houses and a number of teashops, all overlooking the lake. The bridge, erected in 1764 and replacing an earlier bridge from the 16th century, was washed away on 6 December 2015 when Cumbria was hit by heavy flooding during Storm Desmond after storm waters eroded the riverbed around the base of the bridge supports.
Ullswater ‘Steamers’ celebrates over 160 years of operating cruises on one of England’s most beautiful lakes, Ullswater. Operating one of the largest heritage boat fleets in the world they offer the experience all year round. It's quite easy to see why people would make the journey just to stop here. Sitting right on the water's edge I could imagine hours passing by here as you're lost in your surroundings.
Gin lovers Andrew and Emma Kaye opened Chestnut House in May 2016. Set in the heart of Pooley Bridge, it is a two-storey independent grocery shop and off licence servicing the local community and Cumbria’s thriving tourist trade. Appearances are deceptive, from a small shop front, Chestnut House is a Tardis; there’s a local food hall upstairs and on the ground floor you’ll find fresh produce, local meats and of course, a wall of gin, bays of spirits and racks of locally brewed ales.
Pooley Bridge was once a busy market town, before nearby Penrith took precedence in the 19th century, with fish being the mainstay market produce. But despite Penrith taking over, Pooley Bridge has a charm that you just can't replicate in a bigger town.
