The amendments added by Mr Raab were a “power grab” of the bill that will do little to make the public safer, she said. Ms Waxman said some of the proposals, such as giving the justice secretary power to veto Parole Board decisions for prisoners, will “strip away” victims’ rights. Ms Waxman said: “That’s awful for the families to then be pulled into that long process of a legal challenge, which might then result in a prisoner being released. That’s going to cause terrible emotional harm and trauma to those families. And the Government hasn’t really thought about that.”
