The move comes as a union representing physios in Northern Ireland holds its first ballot for industrial action

Radiographers in Northern Ireland are being balloted for strikes amid an ongoing pay dispute in the health service.

Radiography professionals are responsible for carrying out X-rays, MRI and CT scans, ultrasounds and breast screening. They also provide radiotherapy for cancer patients. “Many departmental managers now automatically rota radiographers for overtime – rather than asking for overtime on a voluntary basis – as it’s the only way they can make sure there’s enough staff available. At the same time, pay has been dropping further and further behind the rest of the UK.

“But despite managers’ use of agency workers in order to maintain patient care, there are still not enough radiography professionals to reduce the ever-increasing waiting lists.
