as a ball boy at age 17 and then again when I was hired as a full-time “staff assistant in Pro Scouting” upon graduation from college, did I ever even say to myself, “I want to be a general manager in the NFL.” Nope, not once.My only goal was to keep my head down and my mouth shut. Sure, I had several jobs in between, but getting to the big chair was never the end game for me. Shoot, I didn’t even know what I was doing tomorrow. But what I did do was this: WHATEVER ANYONE ASKED OF ME.
In the NFL, I loved what I did every day. The passion I developed for the game kept me motivated. It got me up early every day, and I was excited to learn the business. And boy, after 35 years, did I ever learn the business. From the ground up in multiple departments —across the entire Football Operations gambit, from the training room, to the equipment room, the film and video department, to scouting .
Those of you who are listeners to The Football GM podcast on Thursdays over the last three years, you already know the things you will get from me. My writing, in my new expanded role with, will include more of the same. I hope to be a resource for our staff of already very good writers and journalists, along with sharing a few experiences from the GM’s chair.
