The economy and rising cost of living had already been a central dividing line in the contest. Ms Truss has promised billions in tax cuts whereas– arguing that he cannot bring taxes down until the economy is more stable. Sunak supporters have argued that Ms Truss’s plans for tax cuts now would be taking a “risk” with the economy, and warned against “magical solutions” that would not deliver.
