Remote island with its own castle and pub you can camp out at during a visit
Most of us will see the appeal of releasing their inner Robinson Crusoe and taking off to a deserted island, but then brushed the idea aside because you'd miss your home comforts too much. Well, how about a compromise and Piel Island located off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula in Barrow, Cumbria is just the place for that.
Talking of castle ruins, you can't miss those. They are what remain of the 14th Century fortress and have recently been restored. Aaron has taken on a dauting project which has already see him transform the neglected and dirty interior of the pub and will next see him refurbish the kitchen which is currently shut and give the three guest rooms a makeover. But he is relishing it all and ready to welcome you with a smile....and a pint of ale.
Watch the odd tanker, sail boat or even jet ski coming across from Lancashire seaside and port towns such as Blackpool, Fleetwood, Heysham and Glasson Dock. The island is popular with both tourists from further afield and locals on a day trip, with a group from Grange-over-Sands we met on the return ferry back to the mainland on a first-time trip and they said they couldn't wait to return.
