Only one candidate refused to raise their hand when asked if they would still support Donald Trump even if he was convicted.
2024 Republican presidential candidates Asa Hutchinson, from left, Chris Christie, former Vice President Mike Pence, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott and Doug Burgum during the Republican primary presidential debate hosted by Fox News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Eight Republican presidential candidate sparred over a range of topics at their first debate of the 2024 election as they sought to win voters’ attention without front-runner Donald Trump.
Asa Hutchinson, former Arkansas Governor, declined to show his hand, while Chris Christie the former New Jersey Governor, half-raised his hand in response to the question. “I’m going to have all these people screaming at me, shouting questions at me, all of which I love answering, I love doing. But it doesn’t make sense to do them so I’m taking a pass,” Mr Trump said.
Despite DeSantis standing second place in the polls, it was Vivek Ramaswamy, the 38-year-old tech entrepreneur and political neophyte, who was at the centre of many of the debate’s most dramatic moments. “We don’t need to bring in a rookie,” former Vice President Mike Pence said, while former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie accused Ramaswamy of sounding “like ChatGPT”.
Vivek Ramaswamy emerged as a popular target early in the debate, drawing cheers from the audience when he introduced himself.
