Researchers are hard at work at developing at-home tests for Lyme disease
If the ELISA test is positive or inconclusive, a second test—known as the western blot test—is performed. The western blot uses electricity to split antibodies into individual proteins, which lab technicians scrutinize for the telltale pattern of Lyme antibodies. The western blot test is actuallyto antibodies than the ELISA test is , but once the ELISA test detects the antibodies, the western blot does a better job of confirming their source.
“Our technique, in theory, would work right after transmission—after you get hit by that bacterium,” Jutras says. “Those [bacterial] molecules should be able to be detected within hours of transmission.” “One of the things that is well known and well accepted in the field is that the most critical predictor of patient outcome is how quickly they get treated with antibiotics,” Jutras says. “If you’re waiting a month to know whether you have Lyme disease or not, that’s a critical window.”
