A video by the Wagner mercenary group purports to show its fighters near Bakhmut's city centre but Ukrainians are also believed to be strengthening their defence positions

It comes as an an aide of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky branded reports by Russia that Ukrainian sabouteurs had deliberately attacked Russian civilians as a false provocation. However, he also seemed to imply that Russian “partisans” were carrying out an attack. Mr Putin claimed during a brief television address that the armed group had fired deliberately on the car knowing there were civilians in it.
