The town's major has warned restauranteurs that 'despicable practices' could see them lose their licence
The mayor of a popular holiday destination in France has issued a warning to restaurants doing stealth 'wealth checks' on potential diners. Locals and holidaymakers in the French Riviera have complained of a shocking practice some eateries are implementing, asking diners to pay €1,500 per head for a table.
One worker at a St-Tropez restaurant told the paper: "It's basically: are you likely to splash the cash, or are you small fry. If it's the latter, you simply get told there are no tables free until early September." Mayor Siri says she will be meeting with restaurant owners at the end of summer to "remind them of their responsibilities". Restaurants guilty of practices which amount to "extortion and organised racketeering", with some potentially compiling illegal databases, may have their licenses revoked.
