When the former banker was appointed in February 2021, his powerful intellect, high-level contacts and deep experience in the financial sector were seen as key attributes for fighting the corner of an organisation facing a funding crisis and the wrath of a hostile government. Sharp was Rishi Sunak’s boss at Goldman Sachs and the BBC has avoided the potentially devastating reforms to its income model which Johnson threatened at the last election.
Sharp will remain in post for two months while his successor is appointed, rather than step aside while a board colleague acts as interim chair. Davie thanked him for this action “in the interest of the corporation’s stability and continuity”. But as Lord Patten observed, the BBC has been effectively without a chairman for months, since this affair emerged.
