'Let's just do this for everybody that's been waiting.'
In a universe where nothing really matters, where a new family can replace your own in a heartbeat, Rick's admittedly hilarious affinity for all things nihilistic can only get you so far. After a while, fans start to long for an actual connection beyond the jokes, which is something co-creator Dan Harmon reckoned with during our own roundtable chat.
"We knew that if we just hit the reset button at the top, that would be considered lazy or unsatisfying," said Harmon."People have to wait a long time between seasons.
The story isn't over just yet though. By positioning Weird Rick as the show's new Big Bad, the writers have anchored this entire season with its most emotional through-line yet.As producer Scott Marder pointed out to us, the death of Diane has"been the engine in Rick that's been driving him through this whole series", even when we didn't know that was the case.
To really bludgeon that point home, season six's first post credits scene avoids the usual silliness said scenes are known for, and instead chooses a far more chilling encounter between Weird Rick and Cronenbergian Jerry.In the premiere's final moments, Cronenbergian Jerry tries to team up with Weird Rick, because that's just what bad guys do. Except Weird Rick isn't your typical bad guy, so he blasts Jerry in the stomach with a laser.Dying Jerry asks.
So yes, the questions and mysteries that have become this show's bread and butter will continue to definestill in season six and beyond. Unlike the Butter Robot from season one –"What is my purpose?" –season 4 airs Sundays on Adult Swim in the US, and airs in the UK on E4 and All 4 at 4am every Monday.
