The right of the party is already flexing its muscles amid talk of proposed tax rises, with former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan-Smith warning this week of “deep concern” among his colleagues in regards to the overall tax burden, particularly in the midst of a potential recession. The suggestion that Mr Sunak is unwilling to stand up to the unions, or to deliver the fiscal medicine the country must stomach is one that is widely shared among certain sections of the Tories. Sir Keir Starmer’s attack lines during PMQs this week, in which he accused Mr Sunak of being “weak” and lacking a “backbone” over Sir Gavin, resonated strongly among many on the Conservative backbenches.
The Williamson saga has burnt any remaining goodwill among vast swathes of the party, with those on the Johnsonite wing ready to pounce on any Treasury plans to unpick the 2019 manifesto. Delaying the social care cap would save the Exchequer £1bn in the first year and £3bn if it were dropped entirely, something criticised by arch-Johnsonite Nadine Dorries as a Treasury saving amounting to no more than a “rounding error”.
