revealed growing unrest among Tory peers over the Government legislation, which they warned was “anti-democratic” as it took decisions over the laws that would be retained away from Parliament.
The Bill is facing further rebellions with Conservative former minister Lord McLoughlin leading a group of cross-party peers who have put their name to an amendment aimed at giving Parliament and the devolved authorities, rather than the Government, the final say over whether EU laws are revoked. A Government spokesperson said: “We are fully committed to the Retained EU Law Bill, a key part of delivering our commitment of removing and reforming burdensome retained EU law.by ensuring regulations fit the needs of the UK, helping to drive economic growth and innovation.”Peers were due to vote on a series of amendments to the Retained EU Laws Bill after the Easter recess, with the Government facing a slew of defeats on the legislation.
Among the amendments was a Liberal Democrat bid to exempt the anti-sewage regulations, known as the Bathing Waters Directive and the Water Directives Framework, from the legislation.
