'Rishi Sunak lied to the country about Brexit” Some Tory Brexiters are raising the prospect of sending no confidence letters to 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady to trigger another leadership challenge

If Rishi Sunak had hoped that the coronation would allow him to move on quickly from Conservative unrest over a disastrous set of local elections he was wrong.

They say policy-focused criticism around tax cuts, levelling up and the extinguished bonfire of EU laws – a “classic example” of MPs being asked to vote for something before it is “watered for reasons no one really understands” – could crystallise into something more dangerous for Mr Sunak. Other senior Tories not aligned to the right are also calling for a radical change of direction in the wake of the local elections defeat, warning of unease among the party’s rank-and-file about Mr Sunak, who was elected by MPs but not members.“They have a leadership they didn’t vote for and that is repudiating a lot of what Boris and Liz tried to do — these are the people they f**king voted for.”and ex-Cabinet ministers Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries host the CDO conference today .

Ms Patel also insists the CDO is “not a vehicle” for Mr Johnson’s return, insisting the conference is “very topical at the moment particularly when we’ve lost over 1,000 councillors in the last week”. Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Communities Secretary Michael Gove will both address the conference, which has sparked concerns about right-wingers forming a British version of the US Tea Party that reshaped the Republicans and paved the way for Donald Trump.

Tory Commons Defence Committee chair Tobias Ellwood warns: “”If we lose the next general election, it won’t be our policies, Boris’ Partygate, nor Truss’s fiscal irresponsibility that will be to blame. Our downfall will be from within. Ryan Shorthouse, chief executive of the centre-right Bright Blue think-tank, warns that the event’s backers are out of touch with “socially liberal” modern Britain: “Building a whole political ideology and electoral strategy around cultural conservatism would make British conservatism appear reactionary and out-of-touch.”
