Ministers are braced for the Conservatives to lose as many as five seats in by-elections over the summer – leaving Rishi Sunak more vulnerable to backbench rebellions HugoGye reports:

The loss of all five by-elections would reduce Mr Sunak’s majority by 10, leaving him more vulnerable to backbench rebellions. Between this summer and the next general election – expected some time between spring and autumn next year – ministers want to pass a number of contentious pieces of legislation including the Online Safety Bill, a ban on conversion therapy and the Renters Reform Bill.

No 10 is understood to be preparing its response to a triple defeat later this month. “I think we will lose all three,” one minister told, vacated by Tory MP Nigel Adams, who resigned in June, by JL Partners found Labour holds a 12-point lead while the same firm estimates Labour leads by eight points in Uxbridge, Boris Johnson’s former constituency.
