Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has been confirmed as the next UK Prime Minister
Penny Mordaunt has announced she is dropping out of the race to replace Liz Truss, paving the way for Rishi Sunak to become the next prime minister.
The former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has been confirmed as the next UK Prime Minister after his rival, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race. Boris Johnson pulled out of the contest on Sunday and Penny Mordaunt then withdrew minutes before the deadline to secure the threshold of 100 MP nominations. In a statement confirming her withdrawal from the contest, Penny Mordaunt said: "despite the compressed timetable for the leadership contest it is clear that colleagues feel we need certainty today." She added that Rishi Sunak has her full support.Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the Conservative 1922 backbench committee, confirmed that Rishi Sunak's leadership nomination was the only valid one received. He said that Mr Sunak would address Conservative MPs at 2:30pm.
Liz Truss is still officially the Prime Minister under she tenders her resignation, with the BBC reporting that King Charles III is returning to London this evening so that this can be arranged. Mark Spencer, Robert Jenrick, Ruth Edwards and Tom Randall were the Nottinghamshire MPs who confirmed they were backing Rishi Sunak.
