As the arrested 28-year-old former researcher was vetted for his pass, it is not known whether this new system would have identified an issue earlier.
A Downing Street source said security services already supported parliament’s vetting procedures and worked with political parties on information-sharing. But the measures envisioned by Ms Mordaunt – which it is understood are now in train – would mean extra safeguards are being put in place for people wanting to work with MPs or donate to political parties.for their criticism of the Beijing regime – have expressed alarm that the unnamed researcher’s arrest did not come to light for six months.as well as improve vetting for people working with MPs.
Addressing the Commons about the affair on Monday, Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle urged MPs not to discuss the specifics of the case in public, including in the chamber, in case it prejudiced any proceedings. The Speaker also said that the parliamentary authorities were reviewing security procedures in light of the arrest, and that a small group of people had known about the arrest of the researcher before it was revealed by the Sunday Times last weekend.
