Sudan airlift could end at any moment with stranded UK citizens facing trek across desert

may have been bought more time after the rival forces who have plunged the country into violence agreed a three-day extension to their ceasefire on Thursday.

However, the Rapid Support Forces has since joined the Sudanese military in agreeing to extend the 72-hour truce that has seen fighting lull. As of Thursday afternoon, a total of 897 people had been evacuated by the UK Government on eight separate flights, with at least two more scheduled to take off before the end of the day.

Once the UK military withdraws from the base, anyone looking to leave the country must travel hundreds of miles to Port Sudan, on the Red Sea coast, or to the border with Egypt. The Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, earlier told the House of Commons his officials were hoping to see the ceasefire extended.
