England are just one game from sporting immortality after beating Australia to set up an epic 2023 Women's World Cup final against Spain.
The Lionesses captured the nation's hearts after ending the 56-year wait for a major trophy with last summer's Euros triumph, leading to record attendances in the Women's Super League. With England among the favourites at this summer's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Sarina Wiegman's side kicked-off Group D with a nervy 1-0 win over Haiti.
England were into the knockouts, but were almost sent home at the first time of asking by Nigeria. James saw red for a stamp as the game went to extra-time and penalties, though England won the shootout 4-2 to set up a quarter-final against Colombia.
That victory has set up a mouth-watering semi-final against hosts Australia in Sydney, and England led 1-0 at the interval through a majestic Ella Toone finish. Sam Kerr replied with an equally audacious goal just past the hour-mark, but clinical efforts from Hemp and Russo sealed a 3-1 win to set up a final against Spain on August 20.
