Leading scientist Lord Robert Winston has told how he was held up by a ‘litany of questions’ during a 999 call as he cradled his dying wife. He said such a ‘waste of time’ was critical, as every second counts when dealing with a cardiac arrest.

Speaking in the chamber yesterday, the IVF expert said: ‘Some months ago, as my wife lay dying in my arms, I phoned the 999 service. Lord Winston, known for the BBC’s Child Of Our Time, pictured with Lady Winston and sons Joel and Ben ‘It is highly dangerous and that makes it very difficult. The last thing we hear as we die is usually the voice of someone who is with us.’
