“The first time I heard Bowie, it was Mick Rock’s music video for ‘Space Oddity’,” says Mosshart. “I saw it on MTV or something when I was a kid and of course fell in love. It’s beautiful. It’s mesmerising. I’m not sure how Bowie affected me musically aside from the comfort I felt that he was in the room, in the air, out there making music and being endlessly creative. He’s like oxygen.” She also highlights a Rock image of Bowie wearing a paisley jumpsuit as a stylistic highlight.
Continuing on the one-piece theme, she also singles out a photograph shot by Bowie’s longtime friend Geoff MacCormack – who joined his world tour in 1973 as an additional back-up vocalist and percussionist – flame haired and wearing a workman’s boiler suit. “I’ve always loved the auto mechanic look.”
