The Rhinos hammered Castleford Tigers 46-0 to secure eighth place in Super League.
Rohan Smith paid tribute to his players after Leeds thumped Castleford Tigers 46-0 to end their Super League campaign in style. The Rhinos had been humiliated in their previous two games by Wigan and Catalans but they proved far too strong for the Tigers at Headingley.
Full-back Luke Hooley opened the scoring and David Fusitu’a added a second before fellow wideman Derrell Olpherts claimed a third and Jack Sinfield’s first try for Leeds made it 22-0 at half-time. Fusitu’a scored twice early in the second half to complete his treble on his 150th career appearance before Sam Lisone and Sam Walters also went over, while Rhyse Martin kicked seven conversions from eight attempts.
Head coach Smith said: “It was emphatic – there was a real drive and determination from the first whistle. It shows the spirit, most from the young blokes who have been bashed from pillar to post. “We ended the season as well as we could have – it couldn’t have gone any better. We showed a lot of spirit and ability to get off the floor, so we will be better for it. I respect the fans and I expect they were disappointed in the overall season – but we will be fighting back in pre-season, for sure.”
Leeds handed debuts to academy graduates Alfie Edgell and Tom Nicholson-Watton off the bench during the second half. Smith added: “It was nice to get two Leeds kids in Alfie and Tom on for their debuts – it was a good night to end a turbulent season. Those kids are Leeds through and through and it was a really special moment in the changing rooms before the game when their families presented their jerseys to them.
